  • Sandra Izsadore, The Mother of Afrobeat | Los Angeles, January 4, 2013
  • For my Fela Kuti’s Legacy project I travelled to Los Angeles to photograph Sandra Smith, aka Sandra Izsadore. Sandra was an active member of the Black Panthers and played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Fela’s political ideas changed radically  while living with Sandra during the early 1970’s in Los Angeles. She talked about her experiences growing up in the US and gave him the autobiography of Malcolm X. “I talked about my ancestral background. I was trying to let him know that we too are African. We might be a watered-down version but African all the same” (excerpt out book: Fela, this Bitch of a Life).

Thank you Sandra, for opening your heart and becoming my new American family!

  • BOOK ‘Ghost Rebublic Somaliland’ | Order now!
  • Finally it’s here! November 1 marks the publication of my first photo book, Ghost Republic Somaliland: democracy against all odds. This remarkable book is the result of my personal travels through Somaliland, a budding democracy within the failed state of Somalia. The publication celebrates the Somalilanders who have been building their nation in the wake of the horrors and atrocities of a dictatorship, and in spite of a complete lack of international recognition. For this project I collaborated with Somaliland newspaper Jamhuuriya, who published my photographs from December 10, 2010 through February 21, 2011. Alongside my photographs this first, limited deluxe edition of 80 hand numbered copies protected by an exclusive linen slipcover also holds the 21 original Jamhuuriya publications.

    size: 11 x 17 inch
pages: 132 pages full color, including 21 Jamhuuriya pages

  • I’m very proud to announce that the New York Times published my Bronxites series today on the NYTimes Lens Blog!

“She has carefully rendered her adopted borough in a series of softly lighted portraits with warm, rich tones. The paint-encrusted walls and plastic-covered furniture are familiar to anyone who has spent time in the area where she began her portrait series, which is known as University Heights, just south of Fordham Road. So, too, are the faces — alternately weary, serene or happy”.

  • Launching ‘Ghost Republic Somaliland’ | May 18th 2011
  • The Republic of Somaliland celebrates its 20th anniversary of independence on May 18th 2011. Somaliland is not recognized as an independent state by the United Nations or any other international organization. Left in legal limbo it is a ghost republic, a pseudo state with no official claims to any title – a democracy against all odds.

My fascination with Somaliland started in 2009, when Fatma Ali, my Somaliland born friend and I traveled to this democratic enigma within what is essentially a failed state – Somalia. In the two years that followed, we documented the Somaliland people who are building the democratic institutions of governance in their unrecognized republic.

Today on their 20th anniversary we would like to share our project to raise awareness about this Ghost Republic.

  • My new website!
  • I’m happy to present my new website including my brand new logo.

The humming bird symbolizes the art of photography because it can create a moment of stillness when hanging still in the air only flapping its wings. The speed of its wings is like a high shutter speed in photography allowing for the creation of an unique and still image of time and space.

Thank you Simone and Erik for designing and building this wonderful new site!

  • My work in The Mercy Project

A charity photography book to raise awareness and funds for hospice care | curated by James Whitlow Delano

In 2008 I received an email from James Whitlow Delano. He posed one question: “share with me one photograph that says to you, ‘MERCY’. After the untimely death of his only sister, Jeanne, he realized how grateful he was for the palliative hospice care she received in her last days, and he wanted to give something back.
